Lecture: Why are my hearing aids so loud?
Friday, October 11, 2024 at 4:00 p.m.
Do you often have the feeling that your hearing aids are uncomfortably loud? You are not alone!
In his lecture, hearing aid acoustician Björn Oehne explains why many people suffer from precisely this problem and what the latest research reveals about it.
Background:
Many people perceive their hearing aids as being too loud. As a result, people only wear their hearing aids occasionally or not at all. Until now, the reasons for this individual perception of loudness were unclear. The latest research results now show that 25% of all people with hearing impairment are hypersensitive to loudness in binaural broadband signals such as speech, music and everyday noises. In practice, this usually remains undetected because the methods used to date to measure hearing use signals that do not adequately reflect reality. We researchers from the Hearing Center explain this phenomenon in layman's terms and present our latest research findings under the umbrella term “trueLOUDNESS”; a measurement method that optimizes the fitting of hearing aids in favour of a normal perception of loudness.
